Leeds United news: Pundit raises ‘red flags’ after Patrick Bamford update

Alan Hutton has suggested Leeds United have made a big mistake not signing cover for Patrick Bamford during the January transfer window.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted there are “red flags” at Elland Road after an update on the 28-year-old.

Speaking at his press conference on Monday (7 January), Marcelo Bielsa revealed there has been no improvement on Bamford’s foot injury in recent weeks.

The Argentine manager went on to reveal the England striker is still yet to resume jogging since suffering the setback in the build up to the defeat against Newcastle.

Bamford is Leeds’ first-choice striker when fit, with Bielsa forced to utilise youth players and makeshift options in his absence.

Hutton admitted the decision not to sign reinforcements last month looks like a major error from the Whites.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It just makes you think why didn’t they bring somebody in?

“Because they obviously knew the injury he had, how serious it was, the time frame.

“Maybe he’s had a setback they didn’t know about.

“But they had an opportunity to bring in cover while he was out.

“There are red flags, why did they not bring somebody in.”

Tyler Roberts, Rodrigo Moreno, Jack Harrison and Dan James have all started as makeshift strikers recently.

Under-23s star Joe Gelhardt has also been handed game time during Bamford’s absence.

The England international has made just six appearances for Leeds this season.
