Leeds United news: Whelan thrilled by what he’s seen and heard about Mateo Joseph Fernandez at Thorp Arch
Noel Whelan has insisted Under-23s football will get the best out of new Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph Fernandez despite his age.
The former Leeds striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he was excited by what he has seen and heard about the 18-year-old so far.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post last Tuesday (25 January), Mark Jackson hailed the striker’s physicality, finishing and movement after working with the striker at Thorp Arch following his move from RCD Espanyol.
The Leeds coach confirmed the teenager will be training with the under-23s, although stated he could play for the under-18s if needed.
Joseph made his debut for Leeds’ under-23s as a substitute in last Monday’s 4-0 Premier League 2 defeat to Blackburn Rovers.
Whelan admitted he was excited by what he has seen and heard about the youngster.
“Look, it’s going to take him a bit of time to adjust to a new country, a new way of playing and new coaching,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“But look, I’ve listened to Jacko and I’ve seen the clips of him. He does look a good size player. Good shoulders and a good size to him.
“This is the best way to learn. Under-18s is probably not where he needs to be. I think under-23s is about right, playing with the better and more established players and learning your trade there.
“When you come into the Premier League, you’re going to be up against men. I’m not saying that there aren’t going to be players in the under-23s that are more aggressive than what you’re going to get on a Saturday afternoon in the Premier League.
“But, at the same time, I think sometimes when you’re up against the best, it brings out the best and you learn more about your game.”

Joseph is still yet to make a senior appearance after coming through the youth ranks at Espanyol.
He signed a contract until 2025 at Elland Road.
