Leeds United news: Whelan tips midfielder for axe as ‘big’ Mateusz Klich verdict issued

Noel Whelan has claimed Mateusz Klich could get the nod over Sam Greenwood as Leeds United face a “very difficult game” away at Liverpool on Saturday (29 October).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 32-year-old’s ability to deal with “big pressure” could be important in the centre of midfield.

As quoted by Leeds Live (27 October), manager Jesse Marsch admitted midfielders Adam Forshaw, Stuart Dallas, and Tyler Adams are injury doubts for Saturday’s Anfield trip.

Klich is yet to start a Premier League game so far this season but has featured from the bench in each of their 11 outings.

The Poland international, who is out of contract in June 2024, has made 191 total appearances for Leeds United – scoring 24 and assisting 21.

Leeds United sit in the bottom three after 11 games – and haven’t picked up maximum points since mid-August.

When asked if Klich should get the nod against Liverpool, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think it makes sense.

“When you’re looking at getting something out of a very difficult game, you need all the experience you can possibly get.

“It’s a crucial part of the pitch. He’s an international player, he’s played at Anfield, and he’s dealt with big pressure before.

Leeds United, Sam Greenwood

“Sam Greenwood hasn’t had those same pressures just yet.

“Klich coming into that midfield area would just offer that experience and guidance to some of the other players as well as the qualities we all know he has.”
