Noel Whelan has insisted Leeds United defender Ben White would give Liverpool’s centre-backs a “run for their money”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider editor Wayne Veysey, the ex-United forward claimed the 22-year-old Anfield target is “better than” first team ace and England international Joe Gomez.
He is said to have scored excellent data metrics on Liverpool’s sophisticated tracking tools and is being bracketed among players who could thrive Champions League and international level.
“Ben White is good enough for Liverpool, in my opinion he is better than Joe Gomez,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He would give the centre-backs vying to partner Virgil van Dijk a run for their money.”
“There is no doubt Ben White will be an England international sooner rather than later.
“It’s incredible to think he’d never played in the Premier League or Championship before this season but, deary me, he is brilliant.
“I’ve seen him every game this season and he’s the best centre-back I’ve seen at Leeds since Rio Ferdinand.”
White, who is on a season-long loan from Brighton, has started all 19 of United’s Championship matches this season and been part of a defence that has remarkably conceded only 10 goals, comfortably the best in the four professional English divisions.
Gomez, who stats boffins CIES Football Observatory value at around £60million, has made 13 appearances for Liverpool this season, including starts in three of their four Champions League matches.
