Leeds United told to complete ‘amazing’ Raphael Guerreiro signing amid ‘scary’ claim – pundit

Kevin Campbell has insisted Borussia Dortmund left-back Raphael Guerriero is one of a number of defensive “upgrades” Leeds United must make in the January transfer window.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, lamented the Whites’ “scary” defensive options at present.

According to 90min (14 November), Leeds United sent representatives to watch Guerriero, 28, in action for Dortmund against Borussia Monchengladbach last week.

The 56-time Portugal international, who will play at this month’s Qatar World Cup, is out of contract at the end of this season and could pen a pre-contract agreement in January.

He has made 18 appearances across all competitions this season – including four outings in the Champions League.

Pascal Struijk has been playing in an unfamiliar left-back role this term with natural option Junior Firpo barely featuring under Jesse Marsch.

Campbell insisted the under-pressure American boss must be backed further in coming transfer windows.

When asked if Guerreiro would be the perfect signing in the left-back berth, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Yeah, I do.

“There’s got to be some upgrades in that defence. They’re just conceding far too many goals at the moment.

“Sometimes it can be really scary, bite your nails stuff when the opposition are moving towards that Leeds United defence.

“I think Jesse Marsch has to be backed further in the transfer market, and Guerreiro would be an amazing January signing.”

Leeds United have conceded 26 goals in 14 Premier League games this term – the joint-fourth highest number of any top-flight side.

The Whites sit 15th in the table heading into the mid-season World Cup break.
