Leeds United transfer news: Mills issues ‘incredible’ Luke Ayling claim after source reveal
Luke Ayling has done “incredibly well” for Leeds United this season and deserves a new contract, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender claimed the 30-year-old would only be offered a maximum of a two-year deal by the club.
A Leeds source told Football Insider on Saturday (19 March) the club are confident of securing Ayling to a new contract.
His current deal at Elland Road is set to expire at the end of next season.
The Englishman has played over 200 times for the club and cemented his status as a cult hero with an injury-time winner in the 3-2 victory over Wolves on Friday night (17 March).
“I think he’s done incredibly well,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“At Wolves, he was unlucky when he hit the post for the second goal and has a hand in that and then he gets the winner. He’s been very, very consistent all the way through.
“The problem is now he’s 30 so by the end of his contract he will be 31 about to turn 32, you’re then looking at yearly deals. Maybe he signs a deal now and it’s a two-year deal.
“That’s modern-day football for you. Clubs are very, very aware there are younger players coming through.

“Senior players are vital and so, so important in the whole makeup of a football club. But clubs have gone away from giving three or four-year deals to players over the age of 30. It’s not a workable model.
“I think they will get him on a new contract, but it will be a season-by-season or a two-year deal when they look to renew.”
