Leeds United news: Joe Gelhardt tipped to start in formation change after picture emerges

Joe Gelhardt could be handed a run of starts for Leeds United if Jesse Marsch adopts his preferred formation at Elland Road.

That is the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about potential personnel changes for Saturday’s trip to Leicester City.

On Monday (28 February), Leeds United confirmed Jesse Marsch has replaced Marcelo Bielsa as their manager.

As reported by The Athletic‘s Phil Hay (2 March), Marsch’s preferred formation is 4-2-2-2.

Gelhardt, Rodrigo Moreno and Tyler Roberts are the Whites’ only central striking options in the absence of the injured Patrick Bamford.

As pictured by club media (2 Marsch), Gelhardt was in the gym ahead of the trip to Leicester on Saturday.

When asked if Gelhardt should be trusted, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs:

“I could see him being given more starts if Marsch is going to play with two strikers.

“But I do not think it is fair on the young man to put loads of pressure on him. He is a youngster who is learning his trade and is finding his feet in the pro-game.

“It’s great that the fans want to see him but let’s remember, they’re in a relegation battle.

“They have got three of four of their main players out injured because they do not have the biggest squad. There is not too much wiggle room in terms of personnel.

“Gelhardt has got an amazing future ahead of him but it would be a big ask for him to carry the goalscoring burden for Leeds given their current situation.”
