Kieran Maguire drops ‘£60m’ Leeds United reveal as new TV deal unveiled

Overseas TV rights are worth around 50 per cent of broadcast income at Leeds United – that’s a whopping £60million.

So says finance boffin Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Premier League struck a new TV deal with BeIN in Turkey.

As per SportsPro Media on 24 August, the Qatar-based broadcaster has won the right to broadcast the Premier League in the country from 2022-23.

They will take over from Saran Media after securing a three-year contract.

Maguire reveals just how lucrative the overseas TV market is for clubs such as Leeds.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “In the present iteration of Premier League TV rights, the domestic value fell by 10 per cent.

“But that was counterbalanced by an increase in overseas rights. We’re not quite yet at a 50-50 split, but we’re almost there.

“For a club such as Leeds, given where they finished in the table, I’d expect them to earn around £125-130m from broadcast rights in a non-Covid year.

“Almost half of that would be coming from overseas rights, so we’re talking somewhere in the region of £60m.

“That’s performance-related. They are popular with broadcasters because they play good football and have a very committed fanbase.

“Therefore they are more likely to pick up facility fees. The way that facility fees work is that you are guaranteed £10m for 10 live broadcasts in a season.

“If you exceed that number of broadcasts, you get an extra £1m per match. Outside the ‘big six’, Leeds are probably the most popular with broadcasters.
