Kieran Maguire: Leeds chief Radrizzani ‘very unimpressed’ amid ‘£30m’ FFP claim

Leeds United will be “very unimpressed” by Uefa’s reported proposal to reform the financial fair play system.

That is the view of finance boffin Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about plans to introduce a ‘luxury tax’ model.

The Telegraph reported on 19 August that Uefa intends to implement a spending ceiling and a premium charge for those clubs that exceed it.

Those funds will then be redistributed among the rest of the footballing pyramid.

But Maguire is sceptical of the benefits for clubs such as Leeds.

“I suspect the likes of Radrizzani will be very unimpressed,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“My fear is that club X, who has wealthy owners and is in a position to pay the luxury tax, increases its wage bill by £20m or £30m.

“That will then get redistributed around dozens of clubs and they’ll end up with an extra £500,000 each, which isn’t going to move the dial.

“It’s not actually going to improve the lot of the recipient clubs. I’m not actually convinced that it’s going to act as a deterrent for paying clubs either.

“So it has the worst of both worlds. From a Leeds point of view, there could be a marginal gain. But everyone else’s income will be going up at the same rate.

“That is unless it is spread between the other clubs who qualify for Uefa competitions.

“Even so, under the new system, there are 96 clubs who will be taking part from 2024.
