Leeds ‘can’t afford it’ as Hay reveals January transfer plan – pundit

Leeds United “can’t afford not to” strengthen their squad in the upcoming January transfer window.

That is the view of ex-Leeds goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest transfer news out of Elland Road.

Whites authority Phil Hay reported on 23 October that he expects Leeds to do “very little in January” unless their “season is on edge”.

Leeds are currently 17th in the Premier League ahead of their must-win clash with Norwich City at Carrow Road tomorrow.

They spent close to £100million in the 2020 summer transfer window but did not add to their squad in January.

Another £50m was spent over the summer and, given that no player has left the club on a fee-paying deal in two years, they will be wary of FFP.

But Kenny claims that the fans will be livid to learn that another conservative winter window is being lined up.

“I don’t think they can afford not to sign anyone,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Everyone else will be looking to strengthen. You can’t afford not to, it’s just too tough in the Premier League these days.

“If Leeds are in the same position they are now, I’ll guarantee they’ll need to strengthen. The fans won’t be happy if they don’t either.

“If you look at where they are now, they’re struggling for form and it looks like it could do with a freshen up.”
