Leeds ‘working on goalkeeper signing’ after Illan Meslier twist
Leeds United have already begun working on signing a new goalkeeper amid growing concerns about Illan Meslier’s performances.
This is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Leeds do not trust the 24-year-old to start between the sticks in the Premier League.
As things stand, Daniel Farke’s side are top of the Championship after 26 games, although just three points separate the division’s top four clubs.
Having missed out on promotion in the playoff final last time out, Leeds are determined to make their way back into the Premier League come the end of the season.
However, after a number of mistakes made by their goalkeeper so far this season have forced the club to consider alternative options for their long-term future.
Leeds and Meslier boast the best goal-difference and third-lowest goals conceded in the division, but an alarming number of the goals they have shipped could have been prevented.
Leeds United make Illan Meslier decision after latest calamity
Leeds are unlikely to make their move to sign a new goalkeeper in January, with Meslier to remain between the sticks for the remainder of the season, but are assessing their options.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after spending over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that the transfer team are already lining up potential alternatives.
“They want to sign a new goalkeeper if they get promoted,” he told Football Insider.
“He made mistakes when he was in the Premier League before and they were talking about whether to keep him on at that stage.
“There are aspects of his goalkeeping that are good, but he’s got a mistake in him.
“He makes far too many silly errors and those can be costly.
“Sometimes a goalkeeper will make a mistake when you’re 4-0 up and you think fair enough, but too often his mistakes come in tight games and cost them points.

“So yes, they want to sign a new goalkeeper, and from what I’ve heard their recruitment team have already begun looking at options.
“I wouldn’t expect them to make a move in January, it’s more likely to happen in the summer, but it’s one they’re considering and if they go up I think they’ll make a move.”
