Leicester City could start next season with immediate points deduction – Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Leicester City could start the 2024-25 campaign on minus points.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Foxes are “in a position of strength” following promotion despite their poor financial situation.

The Premier League charged Leicester for an alleged breach of the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in March, with the EFL also choosing to place the club under a transfer embargo.

Enzo Maresca’s side responded by launching “urgent” legal action against both leagues.

Leicester posted a loss of £89.7million for the 2022-23 campaign, with clubs only allowed to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period under PSR.

Wyness claimed there are still “too many loose ends” to give a definitive verdict on punishment for the Championship winners.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Leicester have got their lawsuits pending against the Premier League and EFL.

“I’m yet to understand the timing of those, and when they’re going to land.

“As I understand it, they could be starting next season with a points deduction straight away.

“Whether they will appeal that, I don’t know.

“There are too many loose ends at the moment to make any definitive statements or give any guidance on that.

“It is another messy situation created by a big grey area in the rules.

“For Leicester, at least they are promoted. I’d rather be in that situation than arguing the case in the Championship.

“They’re in a position of strength.

“They’ve got the Premier League riches in to help pay these wonderful lawyers we are becoming so well-acquainted with.”
