Leicester City points deduction appeal doomed to fail – ‘it’s a slam dunk’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Leicester City are unlikely to have the grounds to appeal a potential Premier League points deduction.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Foxes’ case could be a “slam dunk”.

Leicester were charged in March with a breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2022-23 campaign and launched swift legal action against the Premier League and EFL.

The English top-flight has now confirmed that an independent commission has dismissed the challenge and a hearing will now determine a punishment.

That punishment is likely to come in the form of a points deduction – with Everton and Nottingham Forest docked points in the 2023-24 campaign.

Leicester City PSR case ‘could be a slam dunk’, says Wyness

Wyness previously claimed Football Insider (12 July) that Leicester City face a “minimum 12-point deduction” for their breach of PSR.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The only chance I can see for a Leicester appeal would be that they were in the EFL when the sanction came through.

“I’d have to look into the detail more clearly, but it seems the authorities have already spoken on that – they won’t allow it.

“They haven’t co-operated, I don’t know what other mitigating circumstances they could come up with.

“We’d have to see those when they lodge the papers, but I don’t see many.

“This could be a slam dunk, but we’ve got to see the facts.

“I don’t see much great news if I was a Leicester fan right now.”
