Leicester City points deduction: Keith Wyness stunned by ‘jaw-dropping’ twist

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed he “can’t see” how the Premier League’s new appeal against Leicester can be successful.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it is “very confusing” to see top-flight chiefs invite “yet another problem on themselves”.

Football Insider revealed in a new twist on Friday (18 October) that Leicester are facing more points deduction uncertainty – with the Premier League appearing to have appealed against the latest decision in their PSR case.

The Foxes were charged for the 2022-23 season in March after reporting losses of £89.7million for that year alone – with top-flight sides only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

In what has been widely described as a loophole, they then argued they were no longer a Premier League club when they submitted their accounts on 30 June last year following their relegation to the Championship.

That argument was eventually upheld last month after an appeal, and Wyness insisted he can see “no reason” for the Premier League to respond after speaking to legal experts.

Wyness ‘open-mouthed’ after Leicester points deduction twist

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t see how this can be successful.

“When I checked this, the bar for an appeal to be successful is so high – there had to be a real abuse of the law or the decision had to have been made completely wrongly.

“Considering the experience of the panel appointed by the Premier League, I just don’t see how that can be the case.

“I’m open-mouthed at the Premier League bringing yet another problem on themselves – unless there is a major legal mistake that no one else can see.

“I get Leicester got away with it on a loophole, but maybe the Premier League should just close it and move on.

“I’ve talked to a lot of legal experts about this, and no one can see the reason for the appeal.

“It’s very confusing as to why they’ve done this.”
