Leicester City points deduction: Premier League now needs a major change – Kieran Maguire

The financial charges against Leicester City have exposed the “complications” in English football with both the EFL and the Premier League being regulators.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that a “rethink” is needed to make sure all 92 clubs are under the same regulations.

Leicester City are facing a potential points deduction next season if they achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

The Foxes allegedly breached Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules in the 2022-23 season when they were relegated to the Championship.

They are expected to publish their 2022-23 accounts this month with figures showing that they exceeded the £105million allowable losses over three years for a top-flight club.

Leicester are currently top of the Championship but will only face charges if they return to the Premier League as both competitions are regulated under different rules.

Leicester City points deduction case exposes Premier League and EFL weakness

Maguire believes there are “complications and complexities” that clubs are having to face because of the EFL and Premier League enforcing different regulations.

What happens with regards to Leicester City will be intriguing,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

If the club had remained in the Premier League, it would have had to submit its accounts to the Premier League by the 31st of December and therefore could have been facing charges at the same time as Nottingham Forest and Everton.

Instead, we will have to wait to see if Leicester are promoted.

“If they have exceeded the limits, we will see what speed the Premier League will then proceed with the charges.

It does show the increased complications and complexities of having two separate entities – the Premier League and the EFL – running the professional tiered system in England.

Perhaps there’s a case for another rethink and joining all 92 clubs together once again to avoid such problems going forwards.
