Expert salutes Leicester City as ‘excellent’ Mark Waller deal agreed – ‘he’s one of the best’

Mark Waller is an “excellent” medical practitioner and a first-rate appointment for Leicester City.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

As relayed by Training Ground Guru last Saturday (23 July), Waller has left Rangers after four years to become head of medicine at Leicester City.

He replaces Bryan English following his departure to Middlesbrough at the end of 2021-22.

Waller was a doctor at Liverpool for almost two decades and has also held roles with Aston Villa, Hull City and England Under-21s.

Leicester were one of the worst-hit top-flight clubs in terms of injuries and Covid absences in 2021-22.

Waller’s experience gives them the best possible chance of avoiding a similar scenario in 2022-23, claims Dinnery.

“In terms of being able to manage the role, he is very well experienced,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“He is an excellent practitioner., one of the best around. He’s had roles at Liverpool, Aston Villa and England.

“Transitioning from Rangers to Leicester, he will have more resources but there aren’t going to be massive changes.

“Rangers are big in Scotland but the Premier League is where it’s at in terms of eyeballs. Medical departments are scrutinised but with bigger resources, you can have a bigger team around you.

“The role he held at Rangers is very similar. Some aspects might even be slightly easier because of the size of the team.

“Now, he may be dealing with stakeholders a little bit more. There might also be more emphasis on maintaining secure and up-to-date records. But he is experienced and I’ve no doubt he will thrive.

“Leicester did have a large number of high-profile injuries last season. When you haven’t got the depth of some of your rivals, availability is key. Anything you can do to optimise that is key.”
