Leicester could be about to land new points deduction blow ahead of Premier League announcement
Leicester City have faced uncertainty for the past couple of years following their alleged profit and sustainability (PSR) breaches.
Leicester were initially charged with a spending breach in March 2024 after reporting losses of £90million for 2022-23, with top-flight sides only permitted to lose £105m over a rolling three-year period.
It has since been confirmed the Foxes will not face any punishment for their 2022-23 breach after exploiting a loophole in the rules.
However, Leicester were charged last May with an alleged breach of the EFL’s financial rules for 2023-24 – the year they secured promotion back to the Premier League.
Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Leicester are likely to receive a six-point deduction after their case was heard in November.
When could Premier League make new Leicester PSR announcement?
Leicester are not the only club to have faced issues complying with the PSR rules over the past few years.
Everton previously received two and six-point penalties in the 2023-24 season following two separate breaches, while Nottingham Forest were deducted four points in the same season.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa and Newcastle United have been forced to sell players in previous transfer windows to avoid a spending breach.
Clubs were required to submit their accounts to the Premier League by 31 December for the 2024-25 campaign – a season in which Leicester once again lost their top-flight status.
If a breach was committed by any of the teams in question, it will be announced on Wednesday (14 January).
The i Paper reported on Tuesday (13 January) the Premier League is expected to declare all 20 clubs compliant for the first time in three seasons.
However, there is no mention of Leicester in the report despite their participation in the top flight last season.
Why could Leicester be facing new points deduction blow?
The Foxes were under the Premier League’s jurisdiction last season, meaning they seemingly also had to submit their accounts by 31 December.
Football Insider previously revealed Leicester would be close to breaching the PSR rules in 2024-25 due to their historic financial issues.
Leicester’s losses dropped from £90m in 2022-23 to £19m in 2023-24, with last season’s results all important in their bid to avoid another breach.
The Foxes’ spending limit for the three-year cycle up to 2024-25 was £83m as the cap drops from £35m a season in the Premier League to £13m in the Championship, with one of the campaigns in question played in the second tier.
Marti Cifuentes’s side currently sit 12th in the Championship table, but they are just four points outside of the play-off places.
