Leon Balogun has got a better deal than Rangers – McAvennie

Leon Balogun “has got something to prove” after re-signing for Rangers a year after he was let go.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie was surprised Balogun wanted to go back to Ibrox after they chose not to offer him a new contract last summer.

The Light Blues confirmed (12 July) the re-signing of the 35-year-old on a one-year contract following his departure from QPR.

The centre-back left Ibrox last summer when his contract expired and previously expressed his desire for a new deal before he joined up with Michael Beale at QPR.

The news of Balogun’s return comes after Leon King picked up a serious injury that will keep him on the sidelines for a significant period of time.

McAvennie said injuries are not a good reason to bring back a player a team has previously moved on.

I think it is a better move for him because he was not wanted before and now he is wanted,” he told Football Insider.

If a year ago they did not want you and now they do because there is injuries, I do not know if I would have wanted to go back.

Rangers

He is on a free, you are not going to say ‘no’ to going to Rangers. Was he good enough? I do not know, obviously they did not think so.

He has got something to prove and that may be the time when he steps up. If Michael Beale thinks there is something there then it is a win-win but it is definitely a win for the player.
