Leon King suffers ‘big Rangers setback’ after confirmed news – pundit
Leon King’s latest injury is a big blow to his progress at Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie said King needs the chance to play alongside an experienced centre-back to continue his development.
The 19-year old suffered a contact injury at the club’s pre-season training camp in Germany which will rule him out for a significant period of time.
As a result, the Gers have re-signed former centre-back Leon Balogun on a one-year deal.
King made 23 appearances for the Light Blues across all competitions last season and was in the starting lineup for 14 of those outings.
The centre-back was utilised during Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s spell as manager as a result of Connor Goldson’s injury but has struggled for a place in the side since Goldson’s return to fitness.
King has also fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Ben Davies and John Souttar at centre-half.
McAvennie insisted the youngster’s latest injury will be a “big setback” in his development.
“I think they [the club] really like him,” he added to Football Insider.
“He was learning the game when he first broke in alongside Sands and had no one to learn from.

“If you are coming in you are expecting to play with an experienced centre-half who can show you the ropes and tell you how to do things.
“He had to do it himself and was making choices that cost goals, I do not think anyone would disagree with that. But to have the chance to come in and play with Goldson for a long period of time then who knows.“
