Leroy Sane cited after Rangers agree new forward deal – expert
Rangers will be confident Ianis Hagi is ready to explode after handing him a new contract.
That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
Rangers confirmed last week (15 December) that Hagi had signed a new deal that will run until the summer of 2026.
The 25-year-old has not played since January after undergoing surgery on an ACL injury and is currently in light training.
“There are several examples of players who have returned from really serious injury levels to pre-injury levels of performance without any major issues,” Dinnery told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.
“One example is Leroy Sane who had an ACL injury and is now playing for Bayern Munich and is in the Germany squad.
“Historically it was considered a career-threatening injury but that’s not necessarily the case these days with the advances in surgical techniques.
“Let’s not forget that he’s spent all of his recovery time at Rangers. They are dealing with the player on a day-to-day basis and understand how he’s responding and progressing through those rehab protocols.
“They will have a really good understanding of where the player is at this point although he hasn’t returned to competitive play.
“It’s always risk against reward. While you can never guarantee what’s going to happen in the future, you are basing your decisions on the information you have to hand.

“It’s not dissimilar when you’re signing a player after a medical. It’s not a pass or fail, it’s a checksheet of recommendations. Some go in the player’s favour and there might be some question marks. You make the decision based on finances and where the player will be over the length of the contract because they are commodities.
“The club must be fairly safe in the knowledge that he will return from the injury to pre-injury levels and perform for Rangers over the length of the new contract.”
