Levi Colwill erupts at Cole Palmer and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall despite Chelsea win

Chelsea were jubilant at full-time against Nottingham Forest, but only after Levi Colwill berated his teammates during the late drama.

The 22-year-old defender experienced a rollercoaster of emotions at the City Ground on Sunday, 25 May, scoring the only goal as well as joining Enzo Maresca in fuming at Robert Sanchez during the first half.

Despite a mix of results throughout the 2024/25 campaign, the Blues were able to secure Champions League football on the final day of the Premier League season, but only just.

With Maresca’s side only narrowly ahead, and eight minutes of added time to play, Nuno Espirito Santo‘s players were creating multiple chances, and Chris Wood nearly took one of them with seconds left.

Levi Colwill erupts after Chris Wood chance at the City Ground

Following a long ball forward from goalkeeper Matz Sels in the 95th minute, Wood found himself inside the six-yard box, with Tosin Adarabioyo misjudging the flight of the ball, but the Forest striker fired over.

While the centre-back would have been in hot water had the net rippled, it was Cole Palmer and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who felt the heat from Colwill, having allowed Sels to pushed forward into the Chelsea half and not closed down the goalkeeper.

The defender was absolutely furious and given that Palmer was relatively ineffective on the day, the lack of energy was just too much for the defender to ignore as he immediately turned and launched a furious tirade up-field.

Ultimately, the moment was forgotten as soon as the full-time whistle sounded, at least it was for Chelsea, as Forest still rued the missed opportunity for their striker, who netted 20 times this season.

Enzo Maresca safe at Chelsea after Champions League qualification

Football Insider verdict

While there is still one game remaining in Chelsea’s season – the Europa Conference League final – that is nothing more than just a piece of silverware for the 2024/25 campaign.

Of course, fans will be excited to add another trophy to the cabinet at Stamford Bridge, but after securing Champions League qualification, Maresca should no longer be concerned about his future at Chelsea.

It could also mean that Palmer is less likely to leave Chelsea this summer because, although he was invisible against Forest on Sunday, he is still the squad’s biggest star.

With 15 goals and nine assists, adding to his 25 goals and 15 assists from last term, no player has been more key to the Blues’ season than the 23-year-old. Losing him would be catastrophic.

The manager, with the support of Todd Boehly, needs to make some important decisions during the summer transfer window, not least in the goalkeeper department, and prepare for an exciting 2025/26 campaign.
