‘Liam Rosenior very unlikely to last long at Chelsea’ as contract termination fees speculated

Chelsea have decided to roll the dice once again following their latest managerial change at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca has left Chelsea after his position was deemed untenable following disagreements behind the scenes at the west London club.

Meanwhile, Liam Rosenior has been appointed as the new Chelsea manager, having spent the past year-and-a-half working at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

Rosenior has signed a six-and-a-half-year deal until 2032 as he hopes to achieve long-term success with the Blues.

How much compensation Chelsea could owe Liam Rosenior revealed

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Chelsea will have agreed a liquidated damages clause within Rosenior’s contract.

The 41-year-old has become the London giants’ fifth permanent manager under BlueCo, the ownership group spearheaded by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, since May 2022.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the clauses in Rosenior’s deal, Borson said: “I think it would be two ways. There would be a liquidated damages clause, which deals with what happens if they want to sack him before the end of the six years.

“In all likelihood, that is going to happen if we look at history. It’s very unlikely he’s going to see through six years on this existing contract.

“It’ll probably say one year’s compensation or 18 months. It might have a specific number. Maybe it says £5million, maybe it says £10m.

“Anyway, that’s the liquidated damages clause. It specifies what happens in the event of termination before the end of the term and says what the damages will be payable to the manager. Then you’ve got probably a compensation clause the other way around.”

How much compenation has BlueCo paid Chelsea managers?

Chelsea have paid out around £36m in compensation to former managers during the BlueCo era.

Alongside Maresca, Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino have all been relieved of their duties over the past three-and-a-half years.

Rosenior is looking to help the Blues rise up the Premier League table after slipping to eighth following their poor form in recent weeks.

Chelsea beat Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the new manager’s first game in charge of the club on Sunday (11 January), helping secure their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
