Lineker destroys Klopp on Twitter after Liverpool cup exit
By Matt Farr
BBC Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has slammed “disrespectful” manager Jurgen Klopp after a weakened Liverpool side were knocked out of the FA Cup by Wolves on Saturday.
The Reds chief once again chose to rest several key players for the fourth round tie, and was made to regret his decision when the youthful side were beaten 2-1 by the Championship side.
Philippe Coutinho, James Milner, Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson were among the star names omitted from the starting line-up as the manager picked his side with one eye on next Tuesday’s Premier League showdown against Chelsea at Anfield.
Klopp has now seen his Liverpool side beaten in each of their last three games in all competitions, against opponents that the Premier League title hopefuls would expect to be winning.
They were beaten 3-2 by relegation candidates Swansea a week ago, followed by an EFL Cup semi-final exit at the hands of Southampton – their second defeat to the Saints this month.
Former England striker Lineker took the opportunity to criticise Klopp on his Twitter account for his team selection for Saturday’s clash with Wolves, slating his lack of respect for the competition and their opponents.
“Don’t get Klopp playing his reserves with no European football,” said Lineker. “Shows a lack of knowledge of the depth in English football and respect”.
Klopp has made wholesale changes to his side this month, in a bid to keep players fit; although with no European competition for him this season, this decision has often been criticised in the media.
His rotation policy has backfired horrendously, as his side has now thrown away arguably their last chance of winning silverware this season, with Liverpool currently 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.
