Liverpool 23-year-old leaves squad ahead of £8m move – reliable journalist
By Matt Bullin
Midfielder Kevin Stewart has left Liverpool’s pre-season training squad ahead of a potential transfer to Hull City, according to a reliable journalist.
Times correspondent Paul Joyce reported that the 23-year-old Englishman is set to sign for the Tigers in a deal which could be worth £8million.
Joyce made the claim in a message on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning.
Stewart has been touted by many to kick-on and become a first-team regular for Liverpool in the 2016-17 season, but he only managed to play nine league and cup games.
He arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2014 in a switch from Tottenham’s academy, but he has failed to make much of an impact on Merseyside and has been limited to 20 appearances across all competitions.
The 23-year-old’s spell with the Reds has also seen him farmed out on loan to the likes of Swindon, Cheltenham and Burton Albion.
Football Insider verdict
Stewart’s proposed departure does not come as much of a surprise given the lack of impact he made at Liverpool last season. Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was said to be keen on the youngster, but even that has not been enough to save his Merseyside career. With the central midfielder understood to be moving to Hull, it may pave the way for Andrew Robertson’s transfer in the opposite direction. It remains to be seen whether it is a part-exchange deal, but either way Stewart’s arrival at the KCOM may lessen the blow if City do lose the Scottish left-back to the Reds.
