Kieran Maguire analyses £65m Liverpool statement – ‘these numbers are messed up’

The broadcast income figures in the annual accounts of Liverpool are so high because of Covid-enforced changes to the football calendar.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the £266.1million the Reds banked from TV cash in 2020-21.

Revenue fell by £3m to £487m for the 12 months ending 31 May 2021 as the club revealed a total loss of £4.8m in a statement last Friday (25 February).

But the financial year saw a dramatic £64.5m spike in media-related income, up from £201.6m they made in the last accounting period.

Maguire analysed the sky-high broadcast figure and explained why technical factors have caused them to appear “messed up”.

He told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams: “It is because the accounts represent the time period from 1 June 2020 to 31 May 2021.”

“Under normal circumstances, that would include a full season. But as a result of Project Restart, the numbers are a little bit skewed.

“There were more than 38 matches taking place in that period because matches were postponed and pushed back into the summer of 2020.

“That’s why these numbers are messed up. But they are a good set of figures nonetheless.”
