Liverpool and West Ham on ‘surprising’ list of clubs opposed to deal – Sources

Liverpool and Arsenal are among Premier League clubs opposed to a huge £900million deal for the English Football League, sources have told Football Insider.

West Ham United and Chelsea are also on the “surprising” list of top-flight sides against a funding deal that would see lower league English sides earn a share of nearly £1billion over six years.

Now, it is believed that the UK government’s new football regulator could get involved and impose a deal on Premier League sides to secure EFL funding and ensure clubs are compliant.

Following a meeting between Premier League sides on Monday (11 March), it was revealed that clubs failed to come to an agreement and instead prioritised a new financial system on top-flight spending rules.

An agreement in principle regarding an EFL funding arrangement had been reached nearly two years ago, but the recent meeting has seen it collapsed for now.

A Premier League statement revealed that clubs had “agreed to prioritise the swift development and implementation of a new League-wide financial system” to replace Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The current laws permit clubs to lose a maximum of £105million in a three-year spell.

Breaching these regulations has most recently seen Everton suffer a 10-point deduction, which has since been reduced to six, and Nottingham Forest be charged ahead of a potential penalty.

Other clubs including Chelsea and Newcastle United are also said to be on the fringes of breaking financial rules and could face their own sanctions if they don’t get their affairs in order.

It is believed that some clubs are against the deal as they questioned why they should hand a huge financial boost to potential rivals who already have wealthy owners.
