Liverpool backed for midfielder signing U-turn after Sky reveal – pundit

Liverpool must launch a U-turn and sign a “top” midfielder before the end of the transfer window, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Thiago Alcantara’s injury must prompt a change in transfer strategy.

Thiago limped off with a hamstring injury after 51 minutes of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Fulham on Saturday (6 August).

Sky Sports reported earlier this week (9 August) that the setback will keep the 31-year-old on the sidelines until at least the end of August.

He joins fellow midfielders Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the Anfield treatment table.

Jurgen Klopp insisted that his mounting injury list will not change his stance on bringing in another midfielder and their business was done for the summer.

“It [the Fulham game] proved that they need a centre-midfielder,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Thiago is a good player but he has so many injury problems and Keita is not good enough.

“Liverpool need a central midfielder, a top one. If they don’t get one, I don’t think they have a chance of getting this title back off Man City.

“Teams that win the title take control of the midfield.

“They have to U-turn. They’ve got three weeks to sign a midfielder and they have to sign one.

“If they don’t, then what does that say about where they are looking to go?

“Yes, you want to wait for [Jude] Bellingham but you can’t wait a whole season. Liverpool fans demand challenging for the title and with that midfield they’ve got they won’t be.”
