Liverpool backed to complete ‘big’ Antonio Silva deal after talks reveal – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Liverpool have the ability and capacity to sign Antonio Silva.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker suggested Liverpool may want to bolster their squad to rival Man City’s “incredible” roster.
Portuguese outlet A Bolo reported earlier this week (8 December), via the Liverpool Echo, that the club will hold talks with Benfica over Silva after the World Cup.
The centre-back, 19, is part of the Portugal squad who are preparing to face Morocco in the quarter-finals on Saturday (10 December).
“We know that [Virgil] Van Dijk has been the main player for Liverpool this season. [Ibrahima] Konate has been out injured and played a few games at the World Cup so is getting back to full fitness,” Whelan told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen.
“That relationship and continuity with two centre-halves has not really been there for Liverpool. They have been chopping and changing to find that consistency. They’ve not really had that for too many games one after the other.
“Big clubs will always be looking at other players, they can never have too big of a squad.
“Look at Man City, they’ve got two players for each position and they’ve got an incredible squad.
“If there are players out there who they think are going to improve their team, bolster their chances and cover positions, they’re going to do that.
“They have the capacity and the money to go out and buy players without having to lose a player.

“It adds more competition and sometimes competition brings the best out of people and maybe that’s what they are thinking.
“You can’t saturate one position with five or six top quality centre-halves because they will only be happy for a certain period of time before they want to be playing.”
In other news, Liverpool have opened talks on £180,000-a-week player deal.
