Liverpool backed to make unprecedented Michael Edwards offer to get deal done – Wyness

Former Everton and Aston Villa chief Keith Wyness believes Liverpool could offer Michael Edwards equity in the club to return in a sporting director or more senior role.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – explained that Liverpool will have to make a final decision on their new director by the end of April.

The Reds are in the process of finding a new sporting director to replace Jorg Schmadtke, who left the club at the of the January transfer window.

As revealed by Football Insider, Liverpool want to appoint a new director before the end of March with owners FSG working through a shortlist of candidates.

Edwards, who stepped down from a director role at Anfield at the end of the 2021/22 season, has emerged as the club’s top choice for the vacancy.

He has rejected one approach from FSG but it has been widely reported the owners will return with what could be an unprecedented offer for someone who made their name negotiating transfers and contracts.

Liverpool to offer club shares to tempt Edwards back to director role

Michael Edwards may even be offered some equity in the club to come back,” Wyness told Football Insider.

It would be a first to have somebody at that level actually become an owner.

That’s how well thought of he is for that Liverpool sporting director role.

Liverpool

Liverpool have got to get these things sorted out fairly soon – I don’t think it’s that urgent just yet, but obviously they want stability as soon as they can.

We’ll see how it plays out, but there’s no doubt they’re going to have to make some sort of firm decision really by the end of April.
