Liverpool backed to sign world-renowned ‘maestro’ after developments – pundit
Liverpool will now focus on signing a world-renowned midfield “maestro”.
That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Reds’ midfield options.
Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Joel Matip, Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Calvin Ramsay and Caoimhin Kelleher are all currently sidelined.
These injuries have left Klopp short of options when picking his side’s midfield, as Harvey Elliott, Fabinho and James Milner were selected to start in Monday’s (15 August) draw with Crystal Palace.
McLeish insists recruiting a new midfielder will now be a prioity for Klopp and Liverpool after a slow start to their Premier League season.
“I believe that Klopp will now concentrate on that area [the midfield],” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“He will be looking for some sort of midfield maestro from world football to come in and play in the centre of the park.
“Jordan in 32. When he comes on he is always involved in the middle to front intensity. Normally you think he is the safe guy making sure everyone is ok.
“You could see the energy and the urgency when he came on against Palace. It’s about finding the right guy, always,
“But with the injuries you would think this is something Liverpool are looking at.”

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford on Monday (22 August).
The Reds are 12th in the Premier League table.
