Liverpool backed to win £60m James Maddison race amid emphatic new claim – Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Liverpool can beat Premier League rivals to the signing of James Maddison if they secure Champions League qualification this season.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a top-four finish would give the Reds “the edge” over Newcastle – who could offer more in wages and transfer fees.

Sources told this site on Monday (6 March) that Liverpool have an “active interest” in Leicester playmaker Maddison ahead of the summer window.

Newcastle, Tottenham and Man City are among the other Premier League sides credited with an interest in the England international – who is out of contract in 2024.

It is believed a fee of between £60-70million could prise him away from the King Power Stadium this summer as he is in no rush to pen a new Foxes deal.

Maddison has notched nine goals and five assists in just 19 top-flight outings this season despite Leicester’s struggles.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “James Maddison would be a good fit at any Premier League club.

“If you gave every club the chance to sign him, I’m led to believe they’d all do it. His game is just so well-suited to this league.

“I’m sure Liverpool would love him, but they’ll be wary of Newcastle.

“They’ve been after him for a while – will they come in with more wages or a bigger transfer fee?

“He’s not going to be struggling for a move. If Liverpool get in that top four ahead of Newcastle and Tottenham then that will give them the edge, I would have thought.”
