Liverpool news: Finance guru issues ‘blockbuster’ FSG verdict after news from Brazil

It is no surprise to see Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group targeting a big-name Brazilian club ahead of a possible takeover.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the next stage in the development of FSG’s multi-club empire.

The US-based conglomerate owns NHL side Pittsburg Penguins, baseball outfit Boston Red Sox, and other stakes in minor American sports teams.

Respected Brazilian outlet UOL reported on Saturday (2 March) that FSG are now looking to add a second football club to their portfolio.

It is understood that John Henry and co are eyeing an unnamed top-tier Brazilian club capable of fighting for titles.

This is in contrast to the stance of Man City overlords City Football Group, who are reportedly targeting a side lower down the Brazilian pyramid.

Plumley explained how FSG’s approach is consistent with their tendency for “blockbuster” acquisitions.

“Liverpool are the mothership and will continue to be,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“But the difference between them and some other multi-club networks is that FSG’s incorporates a number of different sports.

“All of these clubs are well known. So from that perspective, the Brazilian approach fits with the FSG model.

“Liverpool are the one that everyone looks to, but the other clubs in the network are independently well known as well.

“That makes you look at merchandise, commercial opportunities and the branding. All of those clubs have already got that cemented.

“It’s a bigger investment to make compared to if you were going for a smaller club.

“But it’s quicker to realise some of the gains from the deal as well. So I think a real blockbuster deal fits more with what FSG have done in the past.”
