Liverpool controversy proves ‘problem heightened tenfold’ as Jurgen Klopp fumes – expert

Paul Robinson has claimed VAR has “heightened refereeing problems tenfold” after Brighton’s loss to Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one insisted Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, 24, should have been sent off for his challenge on Luis Diaz.

Sanchez avoided punishment despite wiping out Diaz in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Ex-Fifa official Keith Hackett told Football Insider (15 March) that referee Mike Dean and VAR official Stuart Attwell should have sent off Sanchez.

He accused Attwell of “sleeping on the job.”

A quoted by Sky Sports (13 March), Klopp was baffled by the officials’ decision and took issue with the concept of “clear and obvious error.”

When asked for a goalkeeper’s perspective on the incident, Robinson told Football Insider:

“I cannot understand why he put his knee up there and I cannot understand for the life of me why VAR did not review it. It was dangerous play and he should have been sent off. How the referee on the field missed that… I cannot fathom how that’s gone unpunished.

“VAR has heightened refereeing problems tenfold. It baffles me. There is an experienced referee on the pitch and an experienced referee in the TV room and they still can’t get it right.

“It was a terrible decision from Sanchez. Everyone watching it in really time gasped. When you watch the replay it doesn’t get any better.”
