Liverpool could make Mohamed Salah switch after reveal pre-Ajax – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Mohamed Salah may return to the wing when Liverpool take on Ajax on Wednesday (26 October).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker claimed Jurgen Klopp’s side lacked creativity in the 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday (22 October).

Salah spearheaded Liverpool’s attack at the City Ground but failed to impact the game.

As revealed by WhoScored, the Egypt international had just 22 touches over the course of the match – less than his goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The Reds travel to Ajax on Wednesday before welcoming Leeds United to Anfield on Saturday.

When asked by Football Insider if Salah would be better used on the right wing, Whelan said: “He has played in a more central role.

“We are used to seeing Salah out on the right-hand side, cutting in and using that left foot which we know is so deadly.

“There was a lot of below par performances for Liverpool, especially up front. There are plenty of players in that team who can unlock the door against a team that sits deep and defend. We did not see that the other day though.

“Everything came from set-pieces but they did not capitalise on their chances. You have to take them in the Premier League. It could have been a different story if one of those set-pieces had gone in.

“You have to give great credit to Nottingham Forest for the desire they showed. It was an important win for them.”
