Liverpool could sell Virgil van Dijk and three superstar teammates after Jurgen Klopp reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed ageing Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Jordan Henderson should be purged from the club over the next two years.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Thiago Alcantara, 31, could be the only survivor among the Reds’ ageing contingent in years to come.

As quoted by the BBC (31 October), Jurgen Klopp dismissed suggestions that his squad is in decline – insisting it is “not 100% fair” to judge while a number of key stars are unavailable.

He claimed “judgement should come later on in the season”.

Liverpool lost 2-1 at home against Leeds United on Saturday (29 October) and slipped to ninth in the Premier League after 12 games.

When asked about the future for the likes of Van Dijk, Salah, and Henderson, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “They’re going through a period where these players aren’t putting in what we need to see from them.

“They haven’t changed from good players to bad players overnight.

“But, when you look two seasons down the road, will they be at the club? Probably not.

“I think maybe Thiago could play that slower role and have the quality required – but there has to be changes and new faces.

“They’ve got youth across the front three, now they need to do the same with the midfield.

“How long is left in the legs of these players? Can they play to the intensity they want to play at?”
