Kieran Maguire: ‘Drinks all round’ in Liverpool boardroom amid news from Premier League HQ
There will be “drinks all round” in the Liverpool boardroom if the League Cup continues to be scaled down.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about England’s elite clubs’ attitude towards the secondary cup competition.
As relayed by The Times on Monday (19 September), the country’s top clubs are considering plans to scrap FA Cup replays and dial back their commitment to the League Cup.

The likes of Liverpool could either field a youth side during or drop out of the competition altogether under the new plans.
The Merseysiders were chief architects of both Project Big Picture and the Super League in October 2020 and April 2021 respectively.
Both proposals would have demanded the abolition of the League Cup, as highlighted by Maguire.
“Liverpool’s owners would be absolutely delighted if the League Cup was scrapped,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“If we take a look at Project Big Picture and the Super League, which were both backed by FSG, both involved the abolition of the second cup competition.
“This was to allow clubs like Liverpool to make more money from lucrative pre-season tournaments and also the expansion of European tournaments.

“If the League Cup does not survive beyond 2024, there will be drinks all round in the Liverpool boardroom.
“The people in charge now will forget the success the club had in the 80s in the competition. It’s a shame because it’s a great day out at Wembley.”
