Kieran Maguire: Liverpool ‘guaranteed’ windfall’ amid £22m-a-year news from Japan
Premier League clubs like Liverpool will receive the same revenue from SPOTV’s decision to sublet their media rights in Japan.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the practice of sublicensing in football broadcasting.
As relayed by Sport Business last Thursday (21 July), SPOTV has sold the rights to stream 114 matches in the 2022-23 Premier League season to Abema.

It is understood that SPOTV are also in discussion about a further sublicensing deal with media giants DAZN.
Per the same outlet in February this year, SPOTV pay £22.2million per season for the rights to broadcast the top flight in Japan.
Maguire explains that Liverpool’s take will remain the same under the new sublicensed rights deal.
“From the Premier League’s point of view, they get a guaranteed deal through the main rightsholder,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“It also means there are fewer people they have to deal with. By having someone who controls the regional rightsholder, you can let the individual matches be divvied up as and when is convenient for individual broadcasters.
“But the Premier League gets the same revenues, which is ultimately what they want. For an organisation that values financial control, you can see the benefits of this.“

Liverpool earned £266.1m in media income in 2020-21, the last financial year on record.
That figure is expected to rise when they publish their 2021-22 accounts.
