Kieran Maguire: Liverpool fans will love emphatic Nasser Al-Khelaifi statement
Liverpool supporters will be delighted that Nasser Al-Khelaifi is publicly opposing the revival of the European Super League.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Paris Saint-Germain and European Club Association president’s recent remarks.
As quoted by the Daily Mail on Wednesday (7 December), Al-Khelaifi that the Super League is a “stupid plan” that will “never happen” because of the strength of fan power.
Liverpool were on of six Premier League sides and nine in total to back out of the breakaway competition in April last year because of a supporter backlash.
But three European giants – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – remain committed to the competition and have set up a company, A22, with a view to a relaunch in the coming years.
Liverpool have previously insisted that their stance on the Super League has not changed, but that was before Fenway Sports Group announced their intentions to sell what will likely be a sizable stake in the club if not all of their equity.
Maguire claims that although Al-Khelaifi’s support is not the final nail in the coffin for the Super League, Liverpool fans will be grateful that someone of his stature is on their side.
“There are two sides to this,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“Paris Saint-Germain’s claim that the Super League will never happen even without the remaining clubs and irrespective of the ECJ ruling is useful from a Liverpool fan’s perspective.
“Real Madrid, Barcelona and the recently financially scandalised Juventus all still publicly support the competition.

“To have somebody senior opposing the breakaway league is beneficial. But in the world of football, you learn to never say never.
“FSG in an ideal world would be more than happy to have a breakaway league. They want to sell broadcast rights direct to fans and reap the benefits in terms of revenue.“
