Liverpool ‘fume’ at Harvey Elliott latest, surprise deal edges closer

Liverpool have been left “fuming” with Harvey Elliott’s lack of game time at Aston Villa, sources have told Football Insider.

The midfielder is spending the season on loan with the second city outfit, but Unai Emery has frozen him out in recent weeks, and he has still started just one Premier League game so far in 2025-26.

Football Insider recently revealed that Liverpool are receiving interest in Elliott from clubs in both the Bundesliga and Serie A ahead of the January transfer window, who could potentially take him on a permanent deal.

However, the possibility of another loan has evaporated away due to the fact that the 22-year-old has already played for two clubs so far this season, and sources have indicated that the Reds are frustrated with the situation that is now playing out.

MLS clubs prepared to offer Harvey Elliott escape route

Liverpool can potentially recall Elliott in January, but he would then only be able to join another club if they played in an overlapping season, such as the MLS or the Brazilian league.

His current stint with Aston Villa is set to become permanent if he makes 10 appearances for his loan club, but the Merseysiders are now expected to intervene before it can get to that stage.

Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool are hugely annoyed with the lack of gametime that their starlet is receiving, while the situation has also angered Elliott as well.

There are discussions planned between the two parties to try and reach some sort of resolution, while there is also interest mounting from the MLS.

That would certainly be something of a shock move for the 22-year-old, but there are plenty of potential suitors for him across the Atlantic if Liverpool decide to open up that avenue.

New England Revolution the ideal club for Liverpool to send Elliott to

Liverpool’s American owners FSG may potentially have the perfect solution to the Elliott conundrum sitting right under their noses at the moment.

The Reds chiefs also own MLB club the Boston Red Sox, while MLS outfit New England Revolution are situated less than an hour away from Boston.

If FSG could strike a deal with New England for them to take Elliott on a brief loan spell until the end of the Premier League season, then it could potentially provide the perfect stopgap, while also allowing them to keep close tabs on him.

Arne Slot has shown little intent to use Elliott regularly since his arrival in the summer of 2024, so a permanent sale feels inevitable either in January or next summer.

For now though, it is just about the Reds trying to find a way of improving the situation for the player.
