Kieran Maguire: Liverpool have just made ‘power’ move as Hewitt talks held

Liverpool have just made a powerful ally in FA chair Debbie Hewitt after she expressed her opposition to the fan-led review.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about events at a recent Premier League meeting.

The Daily Mail reported last Saturday (12 February) that Hewitt won favours at the talks by confirming her hostility to the review.

Tracey Crouch MP outlined a broad cache of proposals to address inequalities in the English game in the report published last November.

Among them are an independent regulator, new owners and directors test, and further consultation with fans over club matters.

Liverpool committed to a supporter presence at board level in the wake of the Super League plot in April last year.

But the ‘big six’ stridently oppose the review and Maguire insists that the Merseysiders will be delighted that Hewitt is in their corner.

“It’s playing to the audience,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“It’s noticeable that the Premier League has put forward chief executives of non-big six clubs to denigrate the proposals.

“The big six clubs themselves aren’t seen as having any credit on this front. So they won’t come out and publicly slate it, even if they’re against it.

“To have found an ally in Debbie Hewitt, they will be happy about that. She’s a powerful figure and someone it can’t hurt to have the backing of.”

Liverpool are in action against Norwich City later today (19 February).

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently 2nd in the table, nine points behind Man City with a game in hand.
