Kieran Maguire: Liverpool have just set new record after official £266m reveal

Liverpool have recorded their highest-ever broadcast income at £266.1million.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Merseysiders’ recently-released annual accounts.

The figures, which were announced last Friday (25 February), show a £4.8m loss on revenues of £487m for the financial year ending 31 May 2021.

Over half of the total turnover was made up of broadcast income, which soared by £64.5m on the previous year.

Liverpool were knocked out by Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League in 2020-21.

Maguire suggests that media income could have seen the Reds turn an overall profit had they made more progress in Europe.

“The broadcast figures are a little skewed because of the way matches fell during Covid,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“But having said that, it’s still the highest figure Liverpool have ever had.

“It compares to £202m in 2020 and £261m in 2019. Had they made more progress in the Champions League, it would have been even higher.

“The semi-final and the final would have been worth another £20m at least. That would, of course, have left them with a profit for the financial year.

Liverpool have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after a 2-0 win over Inter Milan in the first leg of the last-16 tie on 16 February.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are eyeing a historic quadruple after their dramatic shootout victory over Chelsea in yesterday’s League Cup final (27 February).
