Liverpool lead PL big guns in race for £15m-valued defender – report
By Harvey Byrne
Liverpool are leading the race to sign Fulham defender Ryan Sessegnon, according to a report.
Football site Squawka has claimed that the Merseyside giants are fronting the queue for the 16-year-old left-back after making an enquiry in January.
It is stated that a number of the Premier League big guns are also circling around the teenage star with the Reds, Manchester City and Tottenham having expressed the strongest interest to date.
However, it is also believed that Fulham’s demands of £15million could put a barrier to any deal being completed.
Additionally, the London club are eager to insert a loan-back clause into any deal, but Liverpool want to retain his services with Jurgen Klopp thought to be in the market for a new left-back in the summer.
Sessegnon does not turn 17 until May, which is when his first professional contract will be activated.
He has already played in 16 matches for the Fulham senior side after breaking through earlier this campaign and the young starlet has returned with four goals and two assists.
It is claimed that Liverpool are aware that they face stiff competition for Sessegnon’s signature, but Sessegnon is a Reds fans which could work in the famous club’s favour.
Football Insider verdict:
A left-back is a must for Liverpool in the summer. Alberto Moreno’s time at Liverpool is surely up due to his hopeless defending, while the versatile James Milner does a solid job, but can be upgraded. Now, Sessegnon is clearly a bright talent, but he is unlikely to be the man to help the Merseysiders make an instant improvement. It is thought that if Klopp signs Sessegnon then he will still need to make a more senior purchase for the position if he has aspirations of winning the Premier League title. However, Sessegnon will surely become a star in England in the future and is a must buy for any Premier League team.
