Liverpool loanee Kostas Tsimikas sends message as season-ending surgery news confirmed
Kostas Tsimikas has reached out in support of Brighton loanee Evan Ferguson after he took to social media to update supporters on his current injury status.
Ferguson posted to his Instagram page on Tuesday night to confirm that he has undergone surgery on an ankle injury with a picture of his leg in heavy strapping.
The Brighton striker, who is currently on loan at Roma, wrote: “Just to clear some things I have underwent a successful surgery to fix an on going problem, work starts again now to get back fit and playing again.”
Tsimikas, who is spending the campaign at Roma on loan from Liverpool, supportively replied to his post with red heart and fingers crossed emojis.
Ferguson is not expected to recover in time to play again for the Italian giants this season, while he will miss out on the Republic of Ireland’s vital World Cup play-off match against Czechia later this month.
How has Evan Ferguson got on at Roma?
Ferguson was loaned out to Roma ahead of this season after struggling to make an impact during his short spell at West Ham in the second half of last term.
He did not score his first goal for the Serie A side until his 11th competitive appearance against Cremonese on 23 November, but soon found form and was given an extended run in the team by Gian Piero Gasperini.
Ferguson netted a brace against Celtic in December and scored two more Serie A goals before being ruled out with an ankle issue at the end of January.
He has suffered numerous smaller injuries over the course of his career so far, and this latest issue was enough to see him booked in for surgery to correct the problem once and for all, but he is now unlikely to play for Roma again this season.
The 21-year-old has not particularly shone in Italy this season, and is set to be at another crossroads this summer unless Fabian Hurzeler offers him a chance to fight for a place at Brighton.
What does the future hold for Tsimikas at Liverpool?
Tsimikas has struggled even more than his Irish teammate for game time at Roma this season, with just five Serie A starts and 498 league minutes played so far.
Sources have told Football Insider that Man City have shortlisted Roma defender Wesley as a transfer target ahead of the summer, with his fine form keeping the Greek international out of the starting eleven.
There were rumours around a possible early return to Liverpool in January, with Andy Robertson set for a move to Tottenham, but that switch never materialised and so Tsimikas remained in the Italian capital.
He still has a year left on his Reds contract, and with Robertson approaching the end of his deal this summer, Arne Slot may well see fit to include Tsimikas in his plans for 2026-27.
The 29-year-old has not done himself any favours this season, however, and seems equally as likely to be told to find a new permanent home in the summer, given his age and lack of impact out on loan at Roma.
