‘Liverpool backroom staff land big payouts’ after ‘manager resignation’
Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool as a hero last year (2024) after almost nine years at the club, a spell which brought a number of trophies to Anfield.
The German, 57, resigned as manager of the Merseysiders with two years left to run on his deal – and was replaced by Arne Slot.
Liverpool’s accounts for the 2023-24 campaign show Klopp and his staff received a near-£10million pay-off following his exit.
That news has been met with surprise in some quarters, with questions asked about how he can be owed money after walking away from the Anfield dugout.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the real truth behind the payout.
Wyness suggests truth behind £10m Klopp payout at Liverpool
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted the money will have gone to paying out the remainder of the backroom staff’s contract and potential “loyalty bonuses” for Klopp and his colleagues.

The overall report showed Liverpool posted a loss of £57million for last term, with the absence of Champions League football felt at Anfield.
Wyness insisted a “farewell bonus” for resigning managers is “very rare”.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think it was a gift, this payout.
“I think members of his backroom staff would’ve had contracts which went on beyond Jurgen’s.
“They had to be paid off, and there may also have been some loyalty bonuses in the contracts too.
“It would be very rare to give a farewell bonus to a manager who resigned.
“Most managers get the payoff because they’ve failed, and that’s always been the bone of contention for people – managers are rewarded for failure.
“It would’ve been strange if Jurgen was given a bonus on the way out. I think the money was just contractual commitments which had to be paid out.”

Nunez ‘unhappy’ as Liverpool block transfer talks
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (4 March) that Liverpool star Darwin Nunez wanted to quit the club in the January transfer window and was unhappy a potential deal was blocked.
The striker has come under fire in recent weeks from Liverpool boss Slot over his work rate.
Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal were willing to pay huge money for Nunez, 25, and he wanted to hold talks – but was prevented from doing so.
