Liverpool news: Agbonlahor shreds FA after Harvey Elliott development – ‘miles off it’

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Harvey Elliott should not face any punishment for his celebrations after Liverpool beat Chelsea in the EFL Cup final on Sunday (27 February).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed the FA are “miles off it” and are like over-enthusiastic “school teachers who report any little thing”.

Sky Sports reported yesterday (28 February) the FA have written to Elliott to gather his “observations” after he celebrated with a red smoke flare at Wembley.

Liverpool were celebrating their first domestic cup win since the 2011-12 campaign and have not commented on Elliott’s actions.

The midfielder was not even included in the matchday squad initially but was drafted onto the bench after Thiago suffered an injury in the warm up.

He was introduced from the bench with less than 10 minutes to go of normal time and scored his penalty as the Reds won the shootout 11-10.

Asked whether he thought the teenager should be punished for his actions, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “No, I don’t.

“The FA are miles off it sometimes. They’ve won a major trophy, let them celebrate.

“He’s not done anything dangerous, nobody has got hurt. Just move on.

“They’re like school teachers who report any little thing. Leave that alone and let Liverpool look forward to a busy end of the season.”

Elliott missed over three months of the season with an ankle injury he suffered against Leeds in September last year (2021).

The Englishman was making his eighth appearance of the season across all competitions in the win over Chelsea.
