Liverpool news: ‘Brilliant’ Kostas Tsimikas claim issued by Whelan
Noel Whelan has hailed Kostas Tsimikas’ “brilliant mental strength” as he continues to play second fiddle at Liverpool despite a number of impressive cameos.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old’s performances will be “so pleasing” for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.
Tsimikas notched two assists as he started for Liverpool during their 3-3 draw against Benfica in the Champions League quarter-final second leg on Wednesday (13 April) to earn the man of the match award.
As per SofaScore, the Greece international registered the second-most touches (103) and most crosses (15) of any player – as well as winning 10 duels.
Signed in 2020, Tsimikas played just 225 minutes last term – but has notched 21 outings during the hectic 2021/22 campaign.
Whelan suggested the left-back was bought as a “shadow player” for first-choice Andy Robertson.
He told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “He’s so similar to Andy Robertson, isn’t he?
“But Tsimikas knows, Robertson knows, and Klopp knows – Robertson is the first choice.
“He’s continuing to put in these solid performances when he gets the chance, and, wow, that just shows his brilliant mental strength and strength of character.
“Liverpool buy these players knowing that they are a shadow player for what they’ve already got. Look at Luis Diaz and Mo Salah, or Sadio Mane.

“That performance will be so pleasing for Jurgen Klopp, but it still won’t be any help for Tsimikas.
“This is a season for using the squad, and he is an example of a player who is really helping the team by allowing players like Robertson to rest.”
