Liverpool news: Expert backs Jurgen Klopp ‘over his argument’ in new twist to controversy

Alex McLeish has insisted Jurgen Klopp’s proposal to increase the number of substitutes allowed in the Premier League would benefit more than just Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss agreed with the German manager’s “argument” about protecting players from overloading.

As quoted by the Daily Mail on Monday (7 March), Klopp claimed it is “essential” the Premier League changes the rules to allow five substitutes again.

The German boss insisted it would not give the Reds an “advantage” over their rivals and would “save” the “top players” in the league.

McLeish suggested upping the number of substitutes would allow managers at both ends of the table to manage their squads better.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s something we have discussed in the past.

“The players really are playing loads and loads of games, especially clubs like Liverpool in the Champions League. I get that argument from Klopp.

“I would say every Premier League team should have a crop of players (to choose from) because it’s a rich enough league. It’s the richest league in the world.

“I’m with Klopp over his argument. I do believe there are probably players at the likes of Burnley and some of the teams near the bottom. They have got big squads.

“They’ll probably be lamenting not playing some players because they’ll have players in the dressing room whose heads are down. They’re not getting a game.

“Sometimes it’s hard for a manager to maintain the players who are out of the nucleus of the squad. It may be a benefit to every team.”
