Liverpool news: Expert demands unexpected Premier League change after confirmed news
Kevin Campbell has urged the Premier League to do more to incorporate academy products after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp saw his wish for five substitutes granted.
The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, called for a rule which ensures two of the five potential replacements are academy products.
As confirmed in an official statement yesterday (31 March), Premier League clubs have voted to increase the number of substitutions permitted per match from three to five – with the change coming into effect from next season.
Liverpool boss Klopp has long advocated for the increase, alongside Man City boss Pep Guardiola and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.
As quoted by ESPN last month (7 March), Klopp branded the change “essential”.
Campbell insisted there has been a “real neglect” of young talent in English football.
“I’d like to see a rule introduced where two of these subs have to be academy products,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“I think there’s been a real neglect of academies in English football.
“There’s been a lot of money pumped into these systems, and I think every bench should have something to show for it.
“That is something the Premier League should really be looking at if they want these players to succeed.”

As per Transfermarkt, Man United (eight), Southampton (seven), and Tottenham (seven) lead the way in terms of academy products currently in the first team.
However, Watford and Brentford have failed to include a single academy product in their first-team squad this term.
