Liverpool news: Expert issues Sadio Mane verdict amid £10m bid claim
Noel Whelan has insisted Bayern Munich’s £25million offer for Liverpool superstar Sadio Mane was “cheeky”.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the German giants will have to raise their bid by £10million in order to land the wantaway star.
According to The Times‘ Paul Joyce (5 June), Liverpool have rejected an opening offer of £25million from Bayern Munich for the 30-year-old – who is out of contract at the end of the 2022-23 season.
Mane has been vocal in his desire to leave Anfield after a trophy-laden six-year spell at the club.
As quoted by African football journalist Mansour Loum (3 June), the forward responded to a survey suggesting 60-70% of Senegalese people want him to leave Liverpool by saying “I will do what they want”.
Whelan suggested Bayern could yet get “three good years” out of the former Southampton man despite him recently turning 30.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s too low.
“I think everyone starts off with a cheeky bid, don’t they? It’s like buying a house – you go in and test the water.
“If Bayern Munich are going to be realistic, I think they’ll end up around the £35million mark – and that’s considering he has one year left on his contract.
“Even at 30 you’re going to get a good three years out of him, he seems like a player who keeps himself fit.

“He wants this deal to go through, we’ve seen that from the interviews he’s done.
“£25million is cheeky – it’d be cheaper to keep him and challenge once again for the Champions League.”
