Liverpool news: Harvey Elliott will be punished as controversial footage analysed – expert

Harvey Elliott should be punished for his celebrations after Liverpool won the EFL Cup last weekend (27 February), according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and England full-back insisted Elliott’s behaviour should not be encouraged.

The midfielder picked up a smoke flare thrown by a Liverpool fan onto the Wembley pitch after their shootout victory over Chelsea.

Sky Sports News reported on Monday (28 February) the FA had written to him for his observations on the incident.

As quoted by This Is Anfield on Tuesday (1 March), Jurgen Klopp insisted Elliott will “not do it again” and he was set to talk to his player about his responsibilities.

“He probably will be punished,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“After what he’s been through, it’s youthful exuberance that has got the better of him.

“He’s come on during a cup final and it doesn’t look good. It’s not the right sort of image that you want to see. It’s not really the way to conduct yourself.

“It’s not surprising that somebody is going to have a word with him. It’s not the right image, it’s not the right way to act and you don’t want to encourage anything like that. He should know that.

“He might be young, he might be over-celebrating and exuberant but there is a limit to how far you can go within that.”

Elliott was only included on the Liverpool bench against Chelsea when Thiago Alcantara picked up an injury in the warm up.

He was introduced in the closing stages of normal time and scored the Reds’ ninth penalty in the shootout 11-10 victory.
